The Future ?
It's hard to comprehend the change that has occured in the last ten years in the dairy industry let alone try and
predict the future with factors such as C.A.P reform , E.U enlargement and stricter environmental and welfare standards being
demanded. All things considered though as milk producers we are producing not only a uniquely wholesome food but also a raw
material that finds it's way into most other processed foods.
Predictions from leading academics and industry commentators suggest 2005 will see the start of an
unprecedented number of dairy producers exiting milk production leaving the country two billion litres short of
milk by 2006/7 although by 2010/12 this deficit will have been reversed by the remaining producers expanding to meet quota.
A more likely scenario is of a more gradual decline in milk production in the U.K as farmers retire or concentrate on
more profitable diversified enterprises. The remaining producers will not increase production at a quick enough rate to meet
this deficit due to financial and physical restraints and any drop in milk production will remain permanent.
